Competent remodeling is done by well-qualified
professionals of good standing in your local area. Taking the time
to choose your contractor wisely is the key to any successful home
improvement venture.
YOUR REMODELER SHOULD:
• Be properly insured; provide certificates
of insurance for Workers’ Compensation and liability. (Remember:
You can be sued for damages, as well as loss of wages, if your
contractor does not carry Workers’ Compensation and liability
insurance and is injured on your property.)
• Show you examples of recent work and
provide a reference list.
• Provide the names and addresses of suppliers
where your remodeler has established credit.
• Provide a complete, clearly written
contract spelling out quality and quantity of materials and including
specific payment schedules. (Remember: As a resident of New York
State, you have protections provided by the New York State Home
Improvement Contract Law. All proposed work with a value of $500.00
or more must be in compliance with the provisions of
this law.)
• Project a professional image.
